Trail: Moosilauke via George Brook, South Peak, Carriage Rd, Snapper

Date Hiked: 4/9/06

Conditions: Mostly packed powder some loose snow spots. Stay on trail to avoid post holing to knees or deeper.

Special Required Equipment: Several folks on the mountain today had snowshoes, I followed in the tracks of someone with stabilicers. Personally I barebooted it the whole way and did not have a problem. Wind gear for the summit definately necessary.

Comments: Great day for a hike! Ravine Road still closed. One to two inches of snow at the start was mostly melted by the afternoon. Snow got deeper on the way up George Brook trail. If you stayed on the hard packed stuff there was no problem but venutre off to the sides and risk postholing. Dead calm at the base but an easy 20mph wind at the summit and very cold. Carriage road had decent snow cover, took the small side trail to South Peak, this trail had not been broken so mostly post holing the whole way but it is a short trail. Carriage Rd from there only had a few inches of snow but I suspect it will get sliperier and muddier as thesnow melts. Several blow downs on Snapper but nothing hard to get around. My first 4000 footer! woohoo! Only 47 more to go!
