Trail: Caribou Valley Road to Appalachian Trail

Date Hiked: August 8, 2008

The infamous metal bridge on Caribou Valley Road.
I suspect most cars could make it over this bridge, it is the rutted road beyond the bridge that causes problems.
I did see several pickups, large SUVs and even a Jeep Liberty beyond the bridge.

The Appalachian Trail crossing on the Caribou Valley Road.
Not really marked at all, easy to miss if your driving by it if your not looking for it.

Crocker Cirque tentsite. The AMC guidebook says there are only two tent platforms, there are four.
One of which is double size, all of them are kind of wobely. Plenty of overflow area.

The summit of Mt. Crocker.

The only view, decending South Crocker, on the slide near the tentsite.

Appalachian Trail crossing of the South branch of the Carrabassett River.
The recent rains made it to high for me to want to attempt to cross.

Mt. Sugarloaf from the Caribou Valley Road.

Mt. Reddington from the Caribou Valley Road.
It doesn't really show in this picture but it is a very imposing mountain.

One of many cascades along South branch of the Carrabassett River.

Common Brown Snake
Storeria dekayi dekayi
I saw three of these in about 200 meters lying on or near the Caribou Valley Road.

Great Spangled Fritillary
Speyeria cybele
