Trail: Cabot Via Unknown Pond Tr from Brook Mill Rd and Kilkenney Ridge Date Hiked: 19AUG06 Conditions: Northern half of Unknown Pond Trail is in great shape. Some mud near the start but otherwise no blowdowns and minimal rocks. Similar for Kilkenney Ridge Trail from Unknown Pond to Cabot, a few more rocks though and the mud has some old bog bridges to help you across. Some bugs still near the wet areas, put not at the pond? and not bad enough to break out the juice. Special Required Equipment: None today. Comments: Missed the turn from 3N to 110East and almost ended up in Canada. That put me an hour and half behind schedule and I didn't hit the trail until after 8am. The Northern half of Unknown Pond Trail is an absolute dream, one of the best trails I have been on all year, minimal rocks, easy grades nice forests. Campsite and toilet at Unknown Pond were not mentioned in my guidebook but was was a welcome find. Skipped the Horn due to overcast sky in the morning. Saw about 2 dozen people on the trail today, for one of the less popular mountains it sure was busy. Had planned to do Waumbeck on the same day but by the time I had driven to Jefferson from Stark my body had cramped up and said no. Maybe tomorrow. 36/48 |
